While Usain Bolt is smashing records and inspiring millions and making Jamaica proud, I direct your attention to Alia Atkinson. She continues to break world records for speed, and for being the first black women break these records. Yesterday in Doha she won a silver medal at the FINA Swimming World Cup in the 50m breaststroke.
Its almost impossible to achieve what world class athletes do, let alone a Jamaican female swimmer. Financial support is minimal, let alone sponsorships and general support from her nation’s people. Yet she continues to train hard and work hard and achieve. Let’s hope she one day gets the recognition she deserves. Would some national sponsor ever consider a welcome home parade like Digicel did for Tessanne Chin? Would people show up? Let’s hope so.
Yes! Alia has been consistently performing. She has been amazing. I think people have forgotten about her with all the excitement about the athletes…
Yes it is a shame. She works so hard with minimal support.
Yes, she deserves way more credit and celebration.
